Adults are humans or animals which have attained their maximum development. In the human context, the term adult has meanings associated with social and legal concepts. Contrary to the term "minor" (or "non-adult" an legal adult is an individual who is a an age at which they are majority. They are regarded as competent, responsible and independent. Sometimes referred to as "majors", they can also be considered to have reached the age of adulthood. The age for achieving legal adulthood is 18, however, definitions can differ based on legal rights, country and the level of development in psychological terms.

Adulthood refers to the period in the human lifespan when an individual has reached maturity both in mental and physical development. Adulthood, as typically understood, is at the age of 20 or 21. The middle age begins at around 40 years and is followed by the old age of about 60. The three major stages of adulthood are the early years (from the mid 30s until late 60s) mid-adulthood between mid-30s to late-60s and later adulthood, (mid-60s through the time of death). When we reach the early stages of adulthood (between 20-40) the bodies of our children have reached full maturation even though our weight and height might increase a bit. As we enter the first years of our lives, we're physically at our peak. Strength of muscles, reaction time, sensory ability, and cardiac function all reach their maximum.
